Michael ‘Mick’ Nelson is currently working as the AIS Coach Development Lead – SASI. Mick was previously the SASI Volleyball Head Coach for 8 years. He has coached Beach Volleyball at the Beijing 2008 and the London 2012 Olympic Games where his second Olympic Games Coaching role was at the age of 30. He has had 14 inspirational years as a Successful International Coach. Mick’s educational qualifications are through University of South Australia – Bachelor of Applied Science, Recreation Planning and Management, as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching through the University of Queensland. Mick has recently completed study in Motivational Interviewing.
He was a Beach Volleyball National Team coach while becoming the Volleyball Australia Coach of the Year in 2011. He coached on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour from 2007-2013 and again in 2017-2019 He also Coached the Australian U19, U21 & U23 World & Asian Championships campaigns. Winning multiple medals.
Mick has also lead State Team to become National Champions as Head of Delegation and Coaching Director.
Mick has created and implemented National Coach Development frameworks while leading National & International camps and tours. He is a safe pair of hands for coaches looking to grow and develop.
